In Argentina, tourism is not only a significant economic activity but also a mirror of the country's macroeconomic fluctuations, especially regarding the exchange rate and its swings. There are years when Argentina is perceived as affordable in dollar terms, attracting a notable influx of foreign tourists, while at other times, vacationing abroad seems to cost about the same as domestic destinations. Are these just perceptions, or do the data confirm the same trends?

In this context, at Infodash we developed an interactive dashboard using data from the National Migration Office and the International Tourism Survey by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) that allows detailed analysis of tourism trends in Argentina since 2018, covering both inbound and outbound tourism and exploring the number of tourists, type of stay, travel purpose, duration, average spending, entry point, among other variables of interest.

For example, and in line with what was mentioned above, the data shows that the negative tourism balance has deepened in recent periods. In particular, from Q1 2023 to Q1 2025, the number of tourists visiting Argentina has remained relatively stable at around 1,700,000 per quarter, while the number of Argentines traveling abroad has increased from 2 million to 5 million in Q1 2025. That is, in 2025, for every tourist that enters, three leave.

This tool is especially useful for observing the concrete effects of exchange rate policies, foreign currency access regulations, and incentives for domestic or international tourism. With this development, at Infodash we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the economic and social impact of tourism, as well as facilitate evidence-based decision-making.
