Public works investments play a fundamental role in public policy discussions. More recently, they were at the center of debate during the first days of Javier Milei's government. The discussion revolved around what the proper funding should be and whether all projects should be suspended or only those that had not yet started. But let's look at the data -- what is the current state of national investments?
At Infodash we use data provided by the Ministry of Public Works of the Argentine Republic to facilitate access to information about national public works, either through geographic visualization and filtering by different types of characteristics, or through a detailed table on the status of each project. The information can be filtered by year, province, department, sector, project stage, among others.
For example, in the "Detail by Project" section, we can filter by sector, and if we select "Road Works" for the 2015-2024 period, we will observe a wide range of results. Only 41% of the allocated budget was executed, with only 4,509 projects completed out of more than 7,000 initiated. If we filter by project type and select "Highways - expressways," we will notice that in the last two years, only two projects were started, but none were completed, with less than 5% of the budget executed.
