In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, just over 624,000 vehicles were registered in Argentina -- including trailers, automobiles, motorcycles, agricultural and industrial machinery (MAVI), and transportation and cargo vehicles -- far from the peak recorded in 2017 when more than 1,600,000 were registered. In 2023, the number rose to nearly one million, still far from the peak.

These data are easily extracted from the new dashboard offered by Infodash on the evolution of vehicle registrations from 2014 to the present. The dashboard provides statistics not only at the yearly level but also with segmentation by vehicle type, district, and origin (domestic or imported).

For the development of this product, a new vehicle registration database from the Ministry of Economy was used and combined with population statistics by province from INDEC, primarily to obtain per capita statistics.

The dashboard can be used to answer various questions quickly and effectively. For example, using per capita statistics, we can see that several provinces in northern Argentina are in the top 10 for the highest number of registrations. Without per capita information, this fact would go unnoticed. In particular, Chaco and Formosa rank first in per capita motorcycle registrations. Regarding per capita automobiles, Tierra del Fuego leads the ranking and ranks third in transportation and cargo vehicles.

Regarding origin, in 2023, 33% of registered vehicles were imported. However, this percentage hides significant heterogeneities across vehicle categories. In motorcycles, only 1.8% were imported in 2023, while in MAVI (agricultural and industrial machinery) the figure reaches 45%.
